Reinhard Goebel and Théotime Langlois de Swarte have chosen to present us with an astonishing nugget of the Baroque repertoire! Telemann?s work, written around 1750 for the Dresden Orchestra, is as much a concerto as a suite of dances: seven movements of incomparable orchestral brilliance, in which a marvelously decorative solo violin gives way to equally eloquent wind instruments.
Even more surprising is the version for symphony orchestra (did you read that right?!) of Mozart?s brilliant Gran Partita, originally conceived for wind ensemble.
For transcriber Franz Gleissner (1761-1818), this seemed a difficult challenge. Between respect for Mozart?s colors (notably in the sublime Adagio) and the invention of new sonorities, this highly convincing version deserves to be listened to widely.
