About
At the Comédie de Picardie, actor-director Philippe Calvario premieres Musset's play about desire and its troubles. A subtly intense, disenchanted and thoroughly modern score.
After Marivaux?s Le jeu de l?amour et du hasard, Philippe Calvario wanted to take on another classic play, more melancholy and less playful, whose language fascinates him. "Diving into this rich language is a fascinating exploration of desire, reminiscent of the meanders of psychoanalysis," he confides. In this romantic score, which Musset described as a comedy and which ends with a violent ambush, the feeling of love never materializes in a meeting.
Claudio's wife Marianne is in love with C?lio, who asks his friend Octave to intercede on her behalf. Indifferent to C?lio, Marianne gradually falls in love with Octave. "I wanted Claudio to be handsome, so as not to confine Marianne to the role of wife in an arranged marriage, but to assert her independence. She will rebel, and the plot?s atoning victim will not be a woman, but a man. None of the characters are in the same place when it comes to love. Octave is a lonely addict, while C?lio is an impeded man."
As the title suggests, evoking the disorders and fears of love, the play reveals the impossibility of love in a sensual, jubilant shimmer.
ALFRED DE MUSSET (1810-1857)
Romantic playwright and poet, he wrote numerous plays: La nuit vénitienne (1830), Lorenzaccio (1834), On ne badine pas avec l?amour (1834), Il faut qu?une porte soit ouverte ou fermée (1845)? Les caprices de Marianne, published in 1833, was not performed at the Comédie-Française until 1851. As a novelist, he recalls his stormy affair with George Sand in La confession d?un enfant du siècle (1836).
