Georg Philipp Telemann Violin Concerto TWV 51:F4
W. A. Mozart Sinfonia concertante in B major (after the Gran Partita - arrgt F. GLEISSNER)
Reinhard Goebel and Théotime Langlois de Swarte have chosen to offer us a surprising nugget of the Baroque repertoire! Telemann?s work, written around 1750 for the Dresden Orchestra, is as much a concerto as a suite of dances: seven movements of incomparable orchestral brilliance, in which a marvelously decorative solo violin gives way to equally eloquent wind instruments.
Even more surprising is the version for symphony orchestra (you read that right!) of Mozart?s brilliant Gran Partita, originally conceived for wind ensemble. For transcriber Franz Gleissner (1761-1818), this seemed a difficult challenge. Beyond mere curiosity, however, it has to be said that between respect for Mozart?s colors (in the sublime Adagio in particular) and the invention of new sonorities, this very convincing version deserves to be widely played.
