"Barthélémy Toguo says: "Drawing enables me to dialogue and express what comes from my dreams, my desires and my needs. At the École des Beaux-Arts in Abidjan, the artist trained in academic drawing and copying from a model, including Le Christ de la Cathédrale d'Amiens.
"I wanted to draw like the classics, like Titian and Michelangelo. But I couldn't. Instead, I discovered another style of writing that is now my own.
Barthélémy Toguo has retained from this teaching the intensity and precision with which he learned to look at forms and render them with extraordinary accuracy.
The result of intense concentration, his interior gesture is perfectly mastered. Like the series Das bett (1995), which will be on show at Frac Picardie, accompanied by wooden sculptures and specially created works, Toguo's drawing naturally blossoms into hybrids, plants, real and imaginary animals, humans and more than humans.
